by Gabe Jenkins
September 08, 2006

Mr. Jenkins' 7th Grade Life Science Class has moved beyond the early introductory portion of the year to begin learning about science in earnest. As the first unit of the Life Science curriculum, Mr. Jenkins' class will be learning about Bones & Joints.
As part of the unit on bones and joints, his classes will be taking a close-up look at a cross section of a cow femur!!

They'll also learn that:
- Bones are made of living tissue, composed of bone cells
- Bones have several different layers to them, including the marrow, callous bone, spongy bone, and the periosteum
- The overall functions of the bones (as part of the skeletal system) are to 1) provide shape and structure to the body; 2) protect internal organs; 3) produce blood cells; 4) store minerals; and 5) facilitate movement of the organism's body
- Bone marrow is responsible for making blood cells
- Joints are any place where 2 or more bones meet
- There are several different types of joints, including hinge, ball and socket, sliding, box, pivot, immovable, and others.
For more info on bones and joints, please see Mr. Jenkins to get a copy of his amazing PowerPoint presentation he will be showing to his science classes.
Enjoy 'dem bones.
