So you think you got talent?

by Warren Hoang

December 19, 2006

Mr. Jenkins and his 7th grade leadership class are sponsoring our very own talent show here at Edna Brewer Middle School. It will be hosted soon after we return from Winter Break at the Edna Brewer Panther Playhouse.  This Talent show should matter a lot because there are a lot of shy kids at Edna Brewer who amazingly, have A LOT of talent.

The talent show gives them the chance to shine in front of the school to show what they’re made of, and they’ve got just as much talent as anyone else, maybe even more then the average person. So, I’ve decided to interview a few students at Edna Brewer about their personal opinions about the talent show to see what they think.

The following questions were asked:

1. Are you going to participate in the Talent Show?

2. If not, are you going to go watch the Talent Show?

3. What would make you want to go to the Talent Show?

Rikey, a 7th grader at Edna Brewer Middle School believed that he does think he should and has the capabilities to participate in a talent show, but cannot because he is just too timid. His exact words were: “I am thinking about participating in the talent show, but I’m not exactly sure yet because I’m scared I might have stage fright. All my friends tell me I’m not like that and I should go for the talent show since everyone also says I have a lot of talent. To make it worse, my arch enemy is going to be in the talent show, and I can't let him steal the spotlight, I guess he is a little motivation for me.”

Brandon, another one of our brave interviewees from Edna Brewer told us that: “Lots of things would make me want to go to the talent show, one because its always fun watching preteens or young teenagers doing amazing things. Stuff like that fascinates me, all the time and effort they put into their routines.  Especially the dance groups, they have to cooperate so much and spend so many days practicing, getting each dance move right making sure that their perfect. Nothing grabs anybody’s attention more then a good dance routine, it could send the crowd screaming their lungs out, my suggestion since your going to make flyers wanting people to come to the talent show is give them a demonstration of what’s going to actually be there.”

Darren, a student at Edna Brewer Middle School said himself that he is definitely going to watch the talent show if he can, saying, “I am definitely going to go watch the talent show. Not only because some of my friends will be in it, last year's talent show was awesome, and I’m expecting this year to be GREAT. Talent shows are fun and intriguing to me."

Nicholas, a courageous 6th grader stands up to speak his mind, and tells me that he does want to participate in the talent show, his love for the excitement drives him nuts, and he wants to follow in his siblings footsteps, but “sadly, no I will not be participating in this year's talent show, my brother who was an 8th grader here last year was in it, and he encouraged me to participate too, but I just don’t have the guts to stand in front of a crowd. I’m imagining what would happen if I were to participate, but I’m only in 6th grade and I don’t want to embarrass myself so during my 7th and 8th grade years I won't have too much of a hard time.

Christina, a bold 8th grader that attends the great Edna Brewer Middle School has high expectations for this year's talent show, but she thinks that it will be boring since there are a minimum amount of people that are going to be in it, this is her story:

“Talent shows are a bunch of fun, but according to what some people are telling me, there is little people participating, approximately 10 people? What I'm suggesting is to try to get more people to join the Talent Show so it would not be so short. Audience expectations are extremely high, I would know because I have watched last year's talent show. Maybe if you add some more action to it, have someone that has a loud voice who can maybe pop in a few jokes every now and then to rattle the crowd a little bit as an announcer, every little thing counts in school talent shows.”

There you have it, actual opinions interviewed by yours truly. Can they dance? Can they sing? There’s only one way to find out, I hope to see you at the talent show! If you don’t, you’ll miss out because, BREWERS GOT TALENT!

What talent do you have?
