by Jeni Frudden

December 19, 2006

The 6th grade Pathfinders have just finished reading their first novel in Ms. Frudden's Language Arts class. Students loved reading The Skin I'm In by Sharon Flake and are eager to get started on their next novel. Books clubs were a major success and end of book projects were fantastic! If you would like to see some exemplary book projects, feel free to stop by room 27 where the walls are adorned with exciting plot roller coasters, comic strips, character posters, and brand new chapters written from different characters' points of view!  To find out what students really thought about the novel read their rave reviews below.

The Skin I'm In is about a young girl who faces many hardships in middle school. After Ms. Saunders, the new teacher with strange looks, comes Maleeka struggles with racism and being a follower. I like this book, because it stayed with things that could really happen. I would definitely recommend this book, because it will inspire whoever read it to be more confident. My favorite thing about the book is that every chapter was exciting and it kept me hooked.

Maleeka goes through a rough time after her father dies, then she does the wrong things. She starts crushing on her ex-boyfriend again, vandalizes the classroom, and finally gains strength and courage. Maleeka goes through a lot, but she manages to overcome it all. I really enjoyed this book! I like that Maleeka starts out as a weak, coward, who starts to face her fears and soon gains self respect, courage, confidence.

I love this book for its moral and originality. I recommend this book, because it tells about the struggles that young kids start to go through in middle school. The thing I like most about the book was that I could relate to the characters and it make me feel confident about myself.
