Subjects

What is the effect?

Students have favorite subjects and favorite teachers. I want to know why. Why this subject? Why this teacher? I wonder if students think about how this will affect the future or, if they don’t plan to include any of their learning from this subject and/or teacher in their future.

So, I decided to do some research. I asked three students these questions: What’s your favorite subject? Why? Who’s your favorite teacher? Why? How do you think your favorite subject will have an affect on your future, if you advance in it.

Lets start with my interview with Theresa. She told me that her favorite subject is P.E. Why? “Because all the other classes are kinda boring, they make me fall asleep” Ok, not really the answer I was looking for, but alright. Favorite teacher? “I can’t choose…” Why? “Because it’s hard to choose and they’re all trying their best to help us” She didn’t give me an answer for the last question.

Now, moving on, my next interviewee is Ricky. Favorite subject? “Math” Alright, a math lover. Why? “Because I get good grades in it, so it’s fun” Typical, the reason for your enjoyment is because you’re good at it. He doesn’t have a favorite teacher. He says that it’ll be easier to deal with numbers in the future, if he keeps up with his math.

The next person I interview was David, someone who was a little more serious. His favorite subject is math because he believes it’s easier. He doesn’t know his teachers very well, so he doesn’t have a favorite. The answer that I really liked from him was this one. “It’ll be easier to get good jobs and you can get a lot of money” An answer that was more realistic and actually had to do with the future.

What I learned so far is that, we mostly like to do things because they are easy. I’m still wondering why no one has a favorite teacher but ok. Students are still unsure of how the things they learn at school will affect their futures. Which is surprising to me, I thought at least two of the students would have more to say. Well, I guess kids will be kids.
