Being back from the break

by Stephanie H.

February 06, 2007

Welcome back to school. Kids might be tired since they can’t sleep in and just stay at home with no worries about school. Want to know what students feel about being back? In this story I interviewed 3 Edna Brewer Panthers. But first I asked them 5 questions. They are:

1. How do you feel about being back to school?

2. Do you have any goals for the year of ’07?

3. Did you celebrate the New Year in any way?

4. Do you wish the break was longer? Why? Why not?

5. Did you travel anywhere? Out of State? Out of country?

I first asked Cathy H., a 7th grader here what were her answers to these questions. She responds to the first question by saying, “I feel tired and sleepy.” Her answer to the second question was, “ To get good grades, pass 7th grade, and pass all her classes.”

Did she celebrate the New Year? She notes, “ Kind of because, I went to San Jose and did the countdown with my family.” Is it better for the break to be longer? She says, “Yes, because we need time to relax more so we don’t have to think about school.” Travel anywhere? She says, “No not really, I just went to San Jose to open presents.”

I asked Lillian C., another 7th grader the same questions. She responds to the first question by saying, “ Tiring, but good, because you can see your friends, and is a good day to get your grades up for the second semester.” Goals? She says, “ My goals are to get good grades, pass 7th grade, and pass Algebra.” She celebrated her holiday differently then other people might have said. She quotes,“ I celebrated it with my family by giving each other money.” Longer break? She responds, “Yes, because you get more study habits and a break since of all the hard work.” Did she go anywhere? I guess not. She says, “ Sometimes, if it is a long break.”

The final person I asked was Erika H., the last 7th grader I interviewed. She answers the first question by saying, “ Sad, because I have to do homework, but happy because I get to see my friends.” She also has the same goal as interviewee number 2. She says, “ To pass Algebra.” Another answer to the second question, was, “ My cousins came over to eat with us.” Does she think we should have a longer break? She says, “ Yes, because I am very tired.” Go anywhere? Nope. She answers, “No, because we were very busy.”

In conclusion, everyone wants a longer break. They enjoyed their breaks but aren’t that happy about school. They all said the good part was getting to see their friends. People didn’t travel this much during the break.
