Dear parent:
Your child has been selected to participate in a wonderful summer program at Edna Brewer Middle School, called “Brewer University” (BU). It is designed to get students excited about college, to add to their math and English knowledge, and it ends with an exciting field trip to UC Berkeley.
Benefits
1. Students will receive small group instruction in Math and in
English Language Arts
2. Grades earned during “Brewer University” will replace low grades
students may have received during the regular school year
3. All students will be given a nutritious snack and a lunch every
day
4. Students will learn about college: Why it’s important, how to
get in, and what’s fun about it.
5. There will be a free field trip at the end of the program to the
University of California at Berkeley
6. Students completing the program with perfect attendance will
receive a strong letter of recommendation to College-Track, a
program designed to help students get into and PAY for college.
7. All students will receive a special Brewer University
t-shirt
Program Details
Classes – All students will take a Math class, a Language Arts
class, an outdoor class, and an art class
Location – Edna Brewer Middle School, 3748 13th Avenue, Oakland,
CA
Days - Monday through Thursday (note: we do NOT meet on Fridays,
except for the field trip)
Dates and Time - Monday, June 24rd -Thursday, July 17th, 8:15am –
1:00pm
(On the first day of school, June 23rd, please arrive by 8:00am for
orientation)
Food - A snack and a lunch will be provided
Cost - None
Field Trip to UC Berkeley Details (more details to come)
Agenda – Tour the campus, meet current UC Berkeley students, eat
lunch in the dorms, and visit a class
Date and Time – Friday, July 18th, 8:15am-2:00pm
Cost – None
Please fill out the enrollment form on the next page and return it by Thursday, May 15 to your child’s advisor, whether or not you intend to enroll your child in Brewer University. By signing this form, I understand that:
1. My child must attend every session of Brewer University. If there is a conflict I will call the Summer School Principal in advance to report any absences. Three or more absences will PREVENT your child from receiving credit(s) for the program
2. My child must arrive at Edna Brewer Middle school by 8:15 am and the program will end at 1:00 pm each day. I will be responsible for arranging transportation for my child to and from school.
3. The first day, June 23rd, my child must arrive by 8:00 am for orientation.
4. The rules and expectations for behavior are the same as during the regular school year (See rules on back of letter)
