It is an exciting year to be an 8th grader or a parent of one!
As you know, Edna Brewer Middle School has organized its teachers and students into teams, which we call “families”. The two 8th grade teams are called Team Rise and Team Success. Team Rise has two solid veteran Brewer teachers, Ms. Bautista and Mr. Bradford, as well as two fantastic veterans who are new to Brewer, Ms. Ovrahim and Ms. Keys. Team Success also features two wonderful Brewer veterans, Mr. Jensen and Ms. Kimball, and two awesome new Brewer faculty members, Mr. Hong and Ms. Yoo. All eight teachers are dynamic and excited to see their 8th graders rise to success!
In addition, Brewer is featuring a new structure to support our students, called advisory periods. Every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, students will meet with their first period teacher for an extra 25 minutes. The teacher serves as their “advisor” during this time. This period is dedicated to several purposes. Some days, advisors will teach students about violence prevention and character building. Other days, students will work on setting academic and personal goals for themselves, with the advisor’s guidance. Finally, advisors will check students’ agenda books to keep them organized. By now, parents should know who their child’s advisor is and should consider the advisor the main contact person for school-related issues.
